How to Print a Fine Art Book

How to Print a Fine Art Book

G-Print International Overseas Printing Company Answers How to Print Fine Art Book

The gang at G-Print has garnered the most customer compliments from our ability to accurately render works of fine art and photography. Great looking art books and art prints do not happen by accident. Having spent 10 years running a color press himself, owner Bob Gallo has some great book printing tips for artists who care about getting the right “look” for their particular art.

  1. Convert your RGB files to CMYK, and then decide if they need any further adjustment. We have had clients tell us that they thought they converted all the RGB files during the design stage when they actually did not, and then ask if we can convert the images. We certainly provide digital services, including the new Photo Shop edition, but you may not be tickled if Photoshop turns your brilliant orange into a muddy taupe or deep cobalt blues into slate. Take the extra time to convert RGB files yourself for the best results.
  2. Make sure your printer’s proofing system is accurate. When printing full color art books, you should get the best proof product the printer can offer. But that proof is worthless if that printer doesn’t keep their working production system calibrated between proof and press. It’s a simple process that a lot of lesser printers overlook or do not perform consistently. G-Print’s system is designed to keep your projects looking gallery perfect and problem free by calibrating weekly depending on usage.
  3. Make sure your printer’s plating system is calibrated to their presses also. Every press has a dot-gain “fingerprint” of sorts. Dot gain will be greater or lessor at different points along the curve, and a good plate making system features the technology to read an art file and compensate by reducing or enlarging the dot sizes on a plate so that the finished printed sheet matches the proof, which matches the original artist file.
  4. Choose the right stock. While most artists know that quality coated paper stocks allow more ink pigment to stay on the sheet rather than soak into it, many don’t know that the “formation” of a sheet also plays a critical role in the final look and feel of an art book . Formation refers to how well a papers wood pulp is ground. The finer the grind, the better the printed image will view. Coated stocks with poor formation will make dark areas or large solids look blotchy and weak. Don’t buy light cover stocks when perfect binding books. They will not hold up in the long run. When galleries are publishing works of fine art from their studio, they learn to choose the best materials for each project to maximize sales in that market.
  5. Last but not least…Choose the right printer. These pointers are just the tip of the iceburg when it comes down to the knowledge and experience of the management at G-Print International. As you visit printer’s websites, remember only G-print has the resources and range of services to produce black and white, or color books to order.   Please allow us to share our knowledge, time and experience with you, so together we will create a high-quality fine art book worthy of exhibition.
